(DBY-1890) John Nelson Darby

John Nelson Darby translated the Scriptures from Hebrew and Greek. In English the formal title is The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. N. Darby.

The English New Testament appeared in 1867. Revised editions followed in 1872 and, after Darby’s death, in 1884.

The complete English Bible was published in 1890. The New Testament of that edition is Darby’s third revision.

The 1890 Old Testament was prepared by his students from the translations Darby had already made in French and in German.

Wikipedia also records the Elberfeld Bible in German and Darby’s French translation, parallel work by the same translator.

Darby’s English is deliberately literal. The sentence stays close to the order of the source, even when it sounds stiff.

The usual abbreviation of this edition is DBY. On Comentarionista the folder and the button use that 1890 mark.

The 1890 text is in the public domain. It does not depend on a present-day publisher to be read here.

It is not the King James Version, nor the Berean Standard Bible. It is another English translation, with another vocabulary and another punctuation.
